What to do right now
- Get everyone out of the rooms below the impact and stay out of them.
- If a line is involved, or the tree is anywhere near one, call 911 and the utility. Do not approach. Every wire on the ground is live until the utility says otherwise.
- Smell for gas and listen for hissing; if anything is off, leave the house and call from outside.
- Do not cut the tree yourself. A limb under tension is loaded like a spring, and it may be the only thing holding the roof up.
- Photograph everything from a safe distance, the tree, the roof, the rooms below, the yard.
- Call for emergency response and notify your insurer; a tree strike is almost always a reportable claim.
Why a tree strike is different
Connecticut is one of the most heavily wooded states in the country, and mature hardwoods stand over a great many Colchester houses. When one comes down, the failure is not a leak: it is structure. Impact loads break rafters, split ridge boards, shear sheathing off its fasteners and can push a wall out of plumb. The visible hole in the shingles is the least of it.
That changes the order of work. A crew has to assess what is still carrying load before anything is removed, because a large limb resting on a broken rafter may be the only thing holding the assembly in place. Removal is often staged: shore from inside where needed, cut the tree in controlled sections so weight comes off gradually, then stabilise the opening and tarp it. Cutting the tree free in one go can drop the roof.
Expect a tree strike to involve more than one trade, tree removal, roofing, and sometimes framing or a structural engineer if rafters or a bearing wall are involved. Municipal building permits are typically required for structural repairs; your contractor should be pulling them, and you should see them.
Insurance and the neighbour question
Homeowners policies commonly respond to a tree striking the dwelling, and in most cases it is your own policy that handles damage to your house regardless of whose yard the tree grew in, negligence, such as a documented dead tree a neighbour was warned about, is the usual exception. Removal coverage is frequently limited and often capped separately from the repair. Do not assume: report it promptly and confirm the specifics with your own insurer or agent.
Hiring in Connecticut
Contractors performing this work on Connecticut homes are generally required to be registered with the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection as a Home Improvement Contractor. Ask for the registration number, ask for certificates of both liability and workers' compensation insurance, and get the scope in writing separating emergency stabilisation from the permanent repair.
