Two roofing quotes for the same house in Fairfield County can be far apart and both be honest, because they are describing different work. The number to compare is never the total on its own. Read what each one says about tear-off and how many layers come off, the underlayment and the ice and water barrier at the eaves and in the valleys, every piece of flashing at chimneys, walls and skylights, the drip edge, and what happens if the deck underneath turns out to be soft.

• Ask how far up from the eave the ice and water barrier runs, and why that distance.
• Ask whether the attic ventilation is being corrected or simply reinstalled as it was.
• Ask for the Connecticut Home Improvement Contractor registration number and a certificate of insurance.
• Ask for references inside Fairfield County, not just somewhere in the state.
• Ask for the workmanship warranty and the manufacturer warranty separately, in writing.
